Spirits/The Strumbellas 解説

Spiritsはカナダのロックバンド、The Strumbellas(ザ・ストランベラス)が2016年リリースした楽曲です。

こういうフォーク的な要素も持ったロックソングっていいですよね。ライブ会場で全員がシンガロングしている姿が目に浮かびます。

この楽曲は2018年の映画『Midnight Sun(邦題:ミッドナイト・サンタイヨウのうた)』のトレイラーで使われました。映画の雰囲気にぴったり合ったナイスな選曲です。

その後、2020年頃にTikTokでバイラルヒットを記録します。こんな感じで、俳優さんの昔と今の姿を交互に映すムービーで使われることが多かったですね。

そして肝心の歌詞についてですが、意味をとらえるにあたって重要なのはChorusの部分ではなく、Verse1の部分かなと思います。The Strumbellas本人たちがVerse1の解説をしていたテキストがあるので、そちらを引用します。これ以上の説明は不要でしょう。

“I truly am a dreamer, I’ve been a dreamer since I was young. I’ll have conversations with people and they’ll always tell me I’m in la la land. This lyric is about accepting who I am and what I’ve gone through. Here’s to making change and being happier. It’s reflecting on the time I wrote it, but hoping that things will get better. I’m a pretty big romantic in my dreams. I always have day dreams about playing giant shows, I dream about winning a Grammy one day. There’s nothing more fun to me than those surreal dreams, it’s like a magical movie.”

(僕は本当に夢想家で、小さい頃からそうなんだ。誰かと話をすると、いつも「ラ・ラ・ランド(=ミュージカル映画)の住人みたいだね」って言われる。この歌詞は、本当の自分と、経験を受け入れることを歌ってる。変わっていくこと、より幸せになることに乾杯！って感じかな。ちょうど僕がこの歌詞を書いていた頃のことを題材にしてるんだけど、物事が上手くいくことも願ってる。僕はめちゃくちゃデカくてロマンにあふれた夢を描いてる。大きなショーで演奏する想像をいつもしてるし、いつかグラミー賞だって獲ってみたい。そんなありえない夢を描くのが何より楽しいし、魔法がかった映画みたいだよね)
