「boulevard of broken dreams」はロサンゼルスにあるサンセット大通りのニックネームです。
Boulevard of Broken Dreamsは’thアルバム「American Idiot」の製作前の休息期間に作曲されました。ソングライターであり、ボーカルでもあるビリーは製作前に頭をすっきりさせるために、数週間ニューヨークに旅行したそうです。マンハッタンのイーストビレッジに部屋を借りた彼は、バーでジャムセッションに参加したり市内を散歩するのに多くの時間を割きました。ビリーはそうしたニューヨークで過ごした時間や、感じた孤独をこの曲で表現しました。こうして「Boulevard of Broken Dreams」は出来たのです。
この曲は、上に書いた’thアルバム「American Idiot」に登場するJesus of Suburbia(ジーザス・オブ・サバービア)の目線から語られる曲です。この曲の前に「Holiday」という曲があるのですが、「Boulevard of Broken Dreams」はそれと対照的な曲になっています。PVも実はひとつなぎになっており、「Holiday」のPVの終わりには「Boulevard of Broken Dreams」が流れるという構成になっています。
