「Do They Know It’s Christmas?」は、1984年にボブ・ゲルドフとミッジ・ユーロが中心となって結成したチャリティ・プロジェクト“Band Aid”によって制作されたクリスマスソングです。当時、エチオピアで深刻化していた飢饉を世界に伝え、救援資金を集めることを目的として制作されました。ボーカルにはジョージ・マイケルやボノ、スティング、ダリル・ホールなど、イギリスとアイルランドを代表するスターが集結し、当時の音楽シーンに大きなインパクトを与えました。

歌詞は、クリスマスを祝う余裕のない地域に思いを向け、他者を気遣う心を呼び起こす内容になっています。「遠く離れた場所では、今日という日を祝うことさえできない」というメッセージを軸に、豊かな側にいる自分たちが“気づくこと・助け合うこと”の意味を問いかけます。ポップなサウンドにのせながらも、痛烈な現実を突きつける対比が曲の強烈な印象を形作っています。
