「Insane in the Brain」は、サイプレス・ヒルの2ndアルバム『Black Sunday』に収録されています。当時のヒップホップとしてはかなり珍しく、ロックリスナーからも支持を集めたことで大ヒットにつながりました。アルバム自体もBillboard 200で1位を獲得していて、サイプレス・ヒル最大級の成功作になっています。

本曲を手がけたDJマグスは、ファンクやロックの感覚を混ぜた独特のサウンドを意識して制作したそうです。ちなみにMVは監督をジョシュ・タフトが担当していて、歪んだ広角映像や不気味な演出がかなり印象的。90年代HIPHOPのMVらしいカオス感あります。

サイプレス・ヒルは、後のニューメタル勢にもかなり影響を与えたグループとして知られています。実際、ロックフェスへの出演も多くて、ヒップホップとロックの橋渡し的な存在でした。
