「We Built This City」はアメリカのロックバンド、スターシップが1985年にリリースした楽曲です。アルバム『Knee Deep in the Hoopla』からの先行シングルとして発表されました。

80年代らしいシンセと大味なロック感がかなりクセになりますね。サビは一回聴いたらずっと頭に残るレベル。当時はBillboard Hot 100で1位を獲得する大ヒットになりましたが、後年になって「史上最低の曲」としてネタっぽく語られることも多い、かなり不思議な立ち位置の曲です。にしても、この突き抜けた80年代感はなんだかんだ好きな人多い気がします。

We Built This City/Starship 解説

「We Built This City」は、もともとソングライターのマーティン・ペイジらによって制作された楽曲で、スターシップが録音して1985年にリリースされました。当時のスターシップは、ジェファーソン・エアプレイン時代のサイケロック路線からかなりポップ寄りに変化していた時期でもあります。

曲中では、「corporation games（企業のゲーム）」という歌詞が出てくるように、商業主義化する音楽業界への皮肉がテーマになっています。ちなみにブリッジ部分で流れるDJ風の語りは、MTV幹部でもあったレス・ガーランドが担当していました。ラジオ局によっては、その部分を地元向けに差し替えて放送していたらしいです。今じゃありえない、80年代っぽいノリ。

ちなみに本曲、後年になって「史上最低の曲ランキング」の常連みたいな扱いを受けています。Rolling StoneやBlender誌でもかなりネタにされていました。実際、ここまで“嫌われ曲として有名なのにずっと聴かれてる曲”もなかなか珍しい気がします。
