Englishman In New York/Sting 解説

PVに出ている男性は、クエンティン・クリスプ。彼はアメリカへと移住したイギリス人であり、歌詞中の英国人とは彼のことです。クエンティンは作家であり、まだ同性愛に対する偏見や差別が強い時代にゲイであることをカミングアウトした、いわゆる先駆者的な存在です。正に英国紳士といった立ち振る舞いと、エキセントリックな半生は、伝記映画が出来るほど人気を博しました。

ただ、この曲はクエンティンだけでなくスティング自身の事も投影しています。スティングニューヨークで暮らす中でホームシックにかかった事があり、その時に感じていた疎外感を歌詞の中で描写しているのです。

歌詞だけを見れば英国人の特徴の描写が目につきますが、スティングが最も伝えたい事は最後にリフレインされる言葉でしょう。「誰に何を言われても自分らしくいる」。その生き方を体現したクエンティンへのリスペクトも感じますね。
