エド・シーランが18歳のとき、ホームレス支援施設でライブを行い出会った人々のことを歌ったのが「The A Team」です。実際にAngelと呼ばれた女性がモチーフになっています。

またタイトルのAチームですが、単にA級の…という意味だけではありません。これはコカインやヘロインなどの中毒性の高い薬物のことを暗に示した言葉であり、つまりは重度の麻薬依存状態にある人々をさしています。

メロディーはポップらしさを失わないよう明るく仕上げられているのに、歌詞はこんなにも暗く重く寂しい。ホームレス時期もあった、壮絶な人生を送って来たエドだからこそ、真にせまるような説得力がある曲だなと思います。
