West End Girls/Pet Shop Boys 解説

「West End Girls」は、ニール・テナントがニューヨークで音楽プロデューサーのボビー・オーランドと出会ったことがきっかけで制作された楽曲です。実は最初にリリースされた1984年版と、のちに世界的ヒットになった1985年版ではアレンジがかなり違います。最終的にスティーヴン・ヘイグを迎えて再録音し、全英・全米1位を獲得しました。

歌詞は、グランドマスター・フラッシュの「The Message」や、T・S・エリオットの『荒地』から影響を受けているそうです。ヒップホップっぽいリズムと言葉選びがあるのもその影響ですね。ちなみに冒頭の交通音は、ロンドンのスタジオ前で実際に録音されたものらしいです。こういう細かい演出、めちゃくちゃ80年代感あります。

にしても、「West End Girls」はデビュー初期の曲とは思えないくらい完成度高いです。2005年には“1985年〜1994年の10年間を代表する曲”として表彰されていて、今でもペット・ショップ・ボーイズを象徴する1曲になっています。知ってる人はイントロだけでテンション上がるタイプの曲ですよね。
