Eternal Flame/The Bangles 解説

この曲はバングルスのメンバー、スザンナ・ホフスとビリー・スタインバーグ、トム・ケリーの3人により共同制作された楽曲です。名前を聞いたことは無いかもしれませんが、ビリーとトムは数々のヒット曲を手掛けてきたヒットメーカーです。日本で有名なのはマドンナの「Like A Virgin」や、シンディ・ローパーの「True Colors」などでしょうか。スザンナがビリーとトムの手掛けたシンディ・ローパーの「Unconditional Love」を気に入ったのがきっかけで、3人で作曲することに。

タイトルのEternal Flameとは、墓地や戦没兵士の墓で灯されている、消えない炎のことです。スザンナがメンフィスにあるエルヴィス・プレスリーの墓へ行った際に、炎は雨のせいで消えていた事をビリーに話したことがありました。その時にビリーは「Eternal Flame」という言葉が気に入り、曲のタイトルに据えて作曲を進めていきました。こうやって出来たのが「Eternal Flame」なのでした。

全体的にメロディックでピュア、子守唄のような曲調の「Eternal Flame」。アメリカ、イギリスのみならず8ヶ国でチャート1位を獲得した、紛うことなき名曲と言えるでしょう。
