Hotel California/Eagles 解説

Hotel Californiaの解釈は人によって大きく分かれます。冒頭のコリタスがマリファナの隠語であり、まるで幻想を見ているような描写もされていることから、麻薬のことを歌った曲である、と考える人もいます。

ですが作曲したドン・ヘンリー自身は「アメリカの文化の過剰さと知り合いの女の子たち(about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew)」のことを歌った曲だと述べているため、ホテル・カリフォルニアという架空のホテルを舞台にしたストーリーでそれを表現しているのだと捉えるのが正しい解釈だと思います。

カリフォルニア(≒ハリウッド、ロサンゼルス)の煌びやかな暮らしと、それに魅かれて訪れたが最後、二度と抜け出せない恐怖を、これほど印象的に描写した曲は後にも先にも現れないでしょうね。
