Chaka Khan(チャカ・カーン)のソウルフルかつ甘さも感じる歌声がたまらなく心地いいバラード、Through the Fire(スルー・ザ・ファイアー)。楽器隊の音作りが切なくも色っぽくて、何度聴いても飽きない名曲ですよね。

この曲は、Chicago(シカゴ)の「Hard to Say I’m Sorry(邦題:素直になれなくて)」やWhitney Houston(ホイットニー・ヒューストン)の「I Have Nothing(アイ・ハヴ・ナッシング)」など名だたる名曲のプロデュースを手掛けた、David Foster(デイヴィッド・フォスター)が関わった曲です。

面白いのが、デイヴィッドが元々インストゥルメンタルトラックとして作った曲に歌詞をつけてできたというエピソード。デイヴィッドのデビューアルバム「The Best Of Me」に収録されたChakaという曲がそれです(名前…笑)。

こちらもインスト曲として完成されていて、展開なんかも耳心地がいいですよね。もしかしたらこのトラックを生かしたい！という思いからThrough the Fireが生まれたのかもしれません。

なんだったらChakaって名前を付けているくらいだから、チャカ・カーンに歌ってもらうつもりで作ったのかもしれなかったり。

ボーカルトラックがないぶん楽器隊のアレンジが光るし、いわゆるVerseの部分のメロディを引き立たせるようなシンプルな構成が個人的にはグッときますね。
