「Through the Fire」はチャカ・カーンが1984年のアルバム『I Feel for You』に収録した楽曲です。1985年にはシングルとしてもリリースされました。

とにかくチャカ・カーンのボーカルが圧倒的ですね。あまりにも美しすぎるバラード。当時はまだ私生まれてないですが、この曲を20代くらいで味わいたかったです。80年代のバラードはロマンチックで甘い空気があって、ドキドキします。

プロデュースを担当したデヴィッド・フォスターいわく、「Through the Fire」は“最初からチャカ・カーンに歌ってもらう前提”で作った唯一の楽曲だったそうで、制作段階での仮タイトルもそのまま「Chaka」だったとのこと。かなりベタ惚れです。

演奏陣もかなり豪華で、ベースにはネイザン・イースト、ギターにはマイケル・ランドウが参加しています。80年代AOR〜R&B好きにはたまらないメンバーですね。こういう一流ミュージシャンたちの演奏に、チャカ・カーンのボーカルが乗ることで独特の高級感が生まれている気がします。

ちなみにこの曲は、カニエ・ウェストのデビュー曲「Through the Wire」でサンプリングされたことでも有名です。事故で顎を骨折した状態でラップを録音したあの曲ですね。原曲を知ってから聴き返すと、「Through the Fire」というタイトル自体の意味もかなりグッと来ます。
