「Welcome to the Jungle」は、もともとスラッシュが作ったギターリフをもとに制作された楽曲です。バンド結成初期にメンバー全員で作り上げた曲の一つで、のちにデビューアルバム『Appetite for Destruction』の幕開けを飾ることになります。

歌詞については、アクセル・ローズがロサンゼルスに出てきた頃の体験が大きく影響していると言われています。夢を追う若者が集まる街の華やかさと危険さを「ジャングル」と表現したそうです。ちなみに「Welcome to the Jungle」という有名なフレーズは、ニューヨークで見知らぬ男に「お前はジャングルにいるんだ」と言われた体験が元ネタになったとも語られています。

ちなみにMVは当初MTVが放送に消極的だったそうです。しかし早朝に一度だけ放送されたところ視聴者から問い合わせが殺到し、そのままMTVで最もリクエストされる動画の一つになりました。今ではロック史に残る名MVですが、最初はほとんど期待されていなかったというのが面白いですよね。
