「I Shot the Sheriff」は、もともとボブ・マーリーが警察権力への不満や社会的不正をテーマに書いた楽曲だったそうです。本人いわく、本当は「I shot the police」と歌いたかったものの、問題になることを避けて「sheriff」に変えたとのこと。

また、ボブ・マーリーの元恋人エスター・アンダーソンは、「Every time I plant a seed / He said kill it before it grow」という歌詞について、“避妊”を巡る実体験が元になっていると語っています。社会的なメッセージだけでなく、かなり個人的な感情も混ざっていたのかもしれません。
