Human Nature/Michael Jackson 解説

実は「Human Nature」は、もともとマイケルのために書かれた曲ではありません。作曲したのはロックバンド、TOTOのスティーヴ・ポーカロ。当時小学生だった娘が学校で男の子にいじめられて泣いて帰ってきた際、「その子は君のことが好きなんだよ。それも人間の性さ」と慰めたことが曲のきっかけになったそうです。

さらに面白いのが、この曲が『Thriller』に収録された経緯です。プロデューサーのクインシー・ジョーンズへ渡したデモテープの片面に偶然録音されていた「Human Nature」を、クインシーがたまたま聴いて気に入ったことで採用が決まりました。もともとTOTO側もアルバム収録を考えていなかった曲だったらしく、完全に偶然から生まれた名曲なんですよね。ちなみに歌詞はジョン・ベティスによって書き直され、『Thriller』収録予定だった「Carousel」の代わりに採用されました。

もしクインシー・ジョーンズがテープの裏面を再生していなかったら、この曲は世に出ていなかったかもしれません。ちなみに後年はジャズ界の巨匠マイルス・デイヴィスもカバーしていて、「ジャズ・スタンダードになれる曲」と高く評価していました。
