Penny Lane/The Beatles 解説

「Penny Lane」はリバプール(イギリス)のロックバンド、ビートルズが1967年に「Strawberry Fields Forever」と両A面シングルとして発表した楽曲です。

ポール・マッカートニーの作品で、サウンドはビーチ・ボーイズの「Pet Sounds」を意識してるそうです。「ペニー・レイン」はリバプールにあるストリートの名称です。

当初は『Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band』に収録予定でしたが、結果的に『Magical Mystery Tour』のキャピトル編集盤(アメリカ盤)に収録される形となりました。大人の事情やらジョージ・マーティンのこだわりやらで色々ややこしいです。

ポールは曲が完成してからもまだ物足りなさを感じてましたが、偶然テレビで小さなトランペットを吹く奏者を発見、しかもジョージ・マーティンの友人デヴィッド・メイスンでした。後日、デヴィッドを呼び寄せレコーディングに参加してもらったそうです。小さな楽器はピッコロ・トランペットと呼ばれ、楽曲にいい味をもたらしてます。
