「Smoke on the Water」はイギリスのハードロックバンド、ディープ・パープルが1972年に発表した楽曲です。

曲の舞台はスイスのモントルー。モントルー・ジャズ・フェスティバルが行われるレマン湖畔のリゾート地です。

1971年にバンドはレマン湖畔の移動式スタジオ「モービル・ユニット」でレコーディングする予定でした。しかしフランク・ザッパ率いるザ・マザーズ・オブ・インヴェンションのコンサートで、一部の観客がフレアガン(信号拳銃)を撃って火災が発生、カジノを含めたリゾート地を全焼させました。

その後、ローリング・ストーンズの移動式スタジオ「The Rolling Stones Mobile Studio」を借りて、なんとかレコーディングを完了させました。「Smoke on the Water」は一連の出来事がそのまま歌詞になってます。
