Empire State Of Mind ft. Alicia Keys/Jay-Z 歌詞和訳と意味

実は「Empire State Of Mind」は、最初からジェイ・Zのために作られた曲ではありませんでした。ソングライターのアンジェラ・ハントとジャネット・シーウェル＝ユレピックが、ロンドン滞在中にホームシックになったことをきっかけに「ニューヨークへのラブレター」として書き上げた楽曲です。一度はRoc Nationへ送ったものの採用されず、その後あらためてジェイ・Zへ届いたことで現在の形になりました。

当初サビもアンジェラ・ハント本人が歌っていましたが、「もっと合うシンガーがいるのでは」と話し合い、最終的にアリシア・キーズが参加することになりました。ジェイ・Zはサビの「New York」のフレーズをそのまま残し、自身のバースを書き加えて完成させたそうです。

ちなみにアリシア・キーズは後に、本曲を女性目線で歌い直した「Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down」を発表しています。こちらはピアノを中心にしたしっとりしたアレンジで、同じ楽曲でもまったく違った表情を見せてくれます。両方聴き比べてみると面白いですよ。
