もともと「Rewrite the Stars」は、映画『グレイテスト・ショーマン』のために制作された楽曲です。劇中では、身分違いの恋愛に悩むフィリップとアンの関係を描いていて、人種や階級の違いによって引き裂かれそうになる二人の感情がテーマになっています。

2018年には『The Greatest Showman: Reimagined』というカバーアルバムが制作され、その中でアン・マリーとジェームズ・アーサー版の「Rewrite the Stars」が誕生しました。レコード会社側が、「サウンドトラックの中でも特にストリーミング人気が高かった曲を、現代のアーティストで再解釈したい」と考えて企画したそうです。ジェームズ・アーサー自身も映画の音楽がかなり好きだったらしく、アン・マリーとのコラボにも前向きだったとのこと。
