Let It Be/The Beatles 解説

「Let It Be」はリバプール(イギリス)のロックバンド、ビートルズが1970年に発表したシングルです。ポール・マッカートニーの作品です。

ビートルズの崩壊が目前に迫り、苦しい時間を過ごしてる時期に母親のメアリーが夢枕に現れて息子のポールを励ました曲です。ポールにとっては神の恵みのような出来事でそのまま名曲になりました。

Let It Beの意味に関してはどれも正解だと思いますが、ポールの気持ちを尊重する意味を込めて “思いのまま” と訳しました。自然の流れに身をまかせてより背中を押すイメージです。思うがままに、好きなようにしなさいって言われたら嬉しいですよね。個人的な話ですが、私の死んだ父親も私の都合で現れてはこの言葉を言ってくれます。

このフレーズは切ないです。ジョンがビートルズはまやかしだと言い放ったのとは対象的です。確かにポールはリンゴとジョージのプライドを平気でズタズタにするような嫌味な一面もありますが、ビートルズに対する想いは他のメンバーよりも強かったはずです。

エゴと優しさは両方備わっていても両立できないんです。もしポールがバンドのバランサー的役割を担ったら、それはもうビートルズではないと思います。チームは時にエゴイストが必要です。ましてやロックバンドなのですから。
