Shape of Youは、ある男性がバーで出会った女性と肉体関係を持ち、恋に落ちる様子を描いた曲です。エド・シーランの作った曲の中では珍しく、精神的な愛よりも肉体的な愛を歌った曲になっています。

この曲はリアーナに提供するつもりで作られていたのですが、歌詞を書いていくうちにVan the Manなどが頭に浮かんできたため、「リアーナってこんな曲歌わないよね？」と思ってしまったんだとか。そして悩んだあげく、エド自身が歌うことを決めたそう。
