実はこの曲、シングルとして発売される予定はありませんでした。ところがクイーンと親交のあったマイケル・ジャクソンが本曲を聴き、「絶対にシングルカットするべきだ」と強く勧めたそうです。その一言がきっかけでシングル化が決まり、結果的にクイーン最大のヒット曲になりました。

印象的なベースラインは、ジョン・ディーコンが敬愛していたファンクバンド、シックから大きな影響を受けています。特にシックの「Good Times」に通じるグルーヴが感じられることでも有名で、当時としてはロックバンドがここまでファンク色を前面に出した楽曲はかなり珍しかったようです。

ちなみに「Another One Bites the Dust」はスポーツの試合や映画、テレビ番組などでも数え切れないほど使用されているクイーン屈指の代表曲です。一方で1980年代には「曲を逆再生すると”Start to smoke marijuana”と聞こえる」という噂まで広まりましたが、バンド側は意図的なものではないと否定しています。今でも語り継がれるくらい、それだけインパクトのある楽曲だったということですね。
